Loyola’s Sellinger School of Business Launches Master of Accounting

BALTIMORE—Loyola University Maryland’s Sellinger School of Business and Management is launching a Master of Accounting (MAcc) degree program. This full-time 30-credit program consists of 10 courses over three semesters and can be completed in one year. The program is geared for those who majored in accounting as undergraduates. It provides in-depth content in areas such as audit, tax, forensics, and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). The spring term includes an internship and the program allows students to complete the 150 credits of coursework needed for licensure. Applications are being accepted now for the summer 2014 start.

“This program will give students a deeper knowledge of accounting that will enable them to thrive wherever their careers take them in the accounting field,” said Karyl Leggio, Ph.D., dean of the Sellinger School. “Sellinger is one of only 8 percent of accredited universities in the world that has separate business and accounting accreditations, and we are very proud of the high level of success our students achieve. We are excited to be able to offer this advanced degree in accounting to both our students and accounting majors from other colleges and universities.”

“This master’s degree will give students a competitive edge when it comes to jobs,” said Bobby Waldrup, Ph.D., chair of the Sellinger School’s accounting department. “It is becoming the new hiring standard for major accounting firms in the Baltimore area and across the country, and few accountants these days can even think about making partner without a Master of Accounting degree.”

The Sellinger School ranked 20th in accounting nationally on U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Grad Schools 2015” specialties lists. In addition, Sellinger also has an active Accounting Advisory Board representing many national and regional accounting firms and industry leaders and led by Christine Aspell, ’90, and a partner in KPMG LLP.

“In my role, I see how important it is for students to develop a solid technical accounting foundation, as well as strong communication, analytical, and decision-making skills. With the rapidly changing nature of the accounting profession and business world, this advanced degree is increasingly becoming a necessity. As chair of the Accounting Advisory Board and a future employer of accounting students, I’m excited this new program will offer a clear path to completion of the 150-hour requirement, in addition to building a pipeline of very qualified CPAs for years to come,” said Aspell.
