For eligible employees electing health insurance, COBRA (Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act) requires that most employers sponsoring group health plans offer employees and their families the opportunity for a temporary extension of health coverage. “Continuation of Coverage” is offered at group rates in certain instances where coverage under the plan would otherwise end (qualifying events). An employee does not have to show that he/she is insurable to choose continuation of coverage. However, under the law, an employee may have to pay all or part of the premium for the continuation of coverage including administrative fees. This notice serves to inform employees of the University, in a summary fashion, of his/her rights and obligations under the continuation of coverage provisions of the law.
