The Center for Community Service and Justice (CCSJ) hires Graduate Assistants each year who work within the context of CCSJ, which engages students and the broader Loyola community in education through service for a just and equitable world. Each position provides support to specific programs and complements the work of the Center. The positions are:
- Service and Spirituality
This position provides support for all CCSJ initiatives that connect service and spirituality, including the Commemoration of the Martyrs from Central America and the Service and Spirituality Reflection Group.
The Service-Learning Graduate Assistant provides support for the Office of Service-Learning, especially data collection and analysis related to service-learning courses, students, and partnerships.
This position assists with planning and administration of Project U.S. and Encounter El Salvador, CCSJ's two capstone immersion programs. There is no requirement that the Graduate Assistant actually go on the programs.
- Spring Break Outreach
This position assists with planning and administration of Spring Break Outreach (SBO), the University’s alternative spring break community service immersion program. Although the actual trip itself lasts only a week in duration, preparations and administration of the program spans the entire year.
Graduate Student Status / Remuneration
The Graduate Assistant (GA) position is for full-time Loyola University Graduate students. Graduate Assistants must be enrolled in a degree-granting program each semester. Each graduate assistantship provides a bi-weekly stipend and a remission on tuition which is applied at the start of the assistantship contract. This combination of stipend and remission is split 50/50 to provide the greatest pre-tax benefit.
Time Commitment / Compensation
All Graduate Assistants within CCSJ receive $15/ hour and work 15 hours per week for 16 weeks in the semester for a total of 240 hours. Therefore, the total stipend per semester equals $1800 and the total scholarship per semester is $1800 for a total of $3600** per semester or $7200** annually. Some GA positions include some evening and weekend hours.
(**This amount is based on 240 hours/semester. It may be prorated depending on when the position is filled and how many hours of work will actually be completed during the semester.)
GAs are expected to attend and participate in parts of student staff training scheduled annually for the last two weeks of August prior to the beginning of the Fall semester. Additional on-the-job training will also occur.

The GA is expected to perform all of the duties and responsibilities outlined in the specific job description (listed on Loyola's Graduate Assistantship website).
The GA must personally abide by all of the policies and regulations of Loyola University’s Code of Student Conduct, as well as those of federal and local jurisdictions.
- Current, ongoing experience with service-learning, community service, and social justice education/work
- Demonstrated communication and organization skills
- Ability and willingness to work with faculty, students, and community representatives
