Phi Beta Kappa stands for philosophia biou kubernetes, meaning in Latin the "Love of learning is the guide of life." It is an academic honor society with the mission of "fostering and recognizing excellence" in the undergraduate liberal arts and sciences. Founded at the College of William and Mary on December 5, 1776, it is the oldest and most prestigious honor society in the United States. Today, there are 276 chapters and over half a million members.
