U.S. News and World Report named Loyola University Maryland No. 3 among regional universities in the North in its 2012 “America’s Best Colleges” survey. Loyola has ranked among the top five institutions in this category for more than five years.
Loyola was also included in a number of additional categories, including “A+ Schools for B Students” and “Best in Undergraduate Engineering.”
“A+ Schools for B Students” recognizes institutions where good students who may not consider themselves academic “stars” have a strong chance of being admitted and thriving.

Linnane, S.J., president of Loyola. “The ranking is indicative of our commitment to provide our students with a comprehensive, highest quality, academic, spiritual, and social experience that will inspire the rest of their lives. I am particularly honored to see Loyola recognized for its emphasis on the sciences. The advancement of our science programs is a key element of our strategic plan, and one in which we are making great progress, as evidenced by the upcoming grand opening of our Donnelly Science Center expansion and this year’s addition of two women professors in the sciences through a Clare Booth Luce program grant.”
“Best in Undergraduate Engineering” is based on a survey of engineering deans and senior faculty at all accredited programs and recognizes bachelor’s and master’s institutions that offer exceptional engineering programs. Loyola is ranked in the top 50 nationally in this category.
Loyola also tied for No. 3 in the country for highest percentage of students studying abroad (81 percent). The University’s undergraduate business program was ranked in the top third nationwide, and its specialties in finance and international business were both ranked No. 22. Among schools in its region, Loyola came in the top 10 for average amount of need-based aid awarded and was No. 5 on the list of institutions with the highest rates of students who graduate within six years.
The recognition in U.S. News follows Loyola’s inclusion in the Princeton Review’s Best 376 Colleges guide. In addition, the Princeton Review ranked Loyola's residence halls second in the country and its athletic facilities 10th.
