News Detail

August 26, 2011

In anticipation of Hurricane Irene’s impact on the Greater Baltimore region, Loyola University Maryland will be closed from 12 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 28. This closure includes the Fitness and Aquatic Center.

The University has made several changes to its weekend schedule in an effort to ensure the safety of our students and their families, as well as Loyola personnel. First-year students scheduled to arrive this weekend for Pre-Orientation programs will arrive Monday. Meals will be available for these groups Monday evening, and other program activities are scheduled to begin Tuesday morning.

Dinner will be available for resident assistants, student-athletes, and others already on campus on Saturday and Sunday from 5 – 7 p.m. in Boulder Garden Café. These students should also consider stocking some non-perishable goods in their residence hall rooms.

Students and others remaining on campus this weekend are urged to take the following precautions:

  • Follow the instructions of student life staff, who will provide additional directions if specific precautions are indicated.
  • Remain indoors and away from windows and glass doors.
  • Keep interior doors, curtains, and blinds closed.
  • Make sure cell phones and other electronics are charged in advance of the storm.
  • Have cash on hand in case of power outages.
  • Make sure all vehicles have a full tank of gas.

The University will continue to provide updates as needed through www.loyola.edu and InsideLoyola, as well as the University’s Facebook and Twitter accounts. These social media channels should remain accessible in the event that the storm or a power outage affects the University’s Web presence or other systems.

Loyola officials will monitor the progress and impact of the storm throughout the weekend and will reevaluate the University’s operations and schedules if conditions indicate.

The University urges all members of the Loyola family, as well as their loved ones, to take caution this weekend.
