Loyola University Maryland’s chapter of Best Buddies, a non-profit organization that promotes friendships, integrated employment, and leadership opportunities for people with developmental disabilities, was named “Outstanding College Chapter” at Best Buddies International’s 2010 Leadership Conference.
The University’s chapter was selected from among 400 Best Buddies college chapters worldwide and 62 Outstanding Chapter applicants.
Loyola’s Best Buddies chapter promotes friendships between college students and people with developmental and intellectual disabilities through one-on-one outings and monthly group events. These gatherings can range from bowling on the weekends to shared meals to attending cultural events.
“Loyola is deeply proud of our partnership with Best Buddies International, which offers our students a wonderful opportunity to find common ground and shared interests with young adults with disabilities,” said Dennis McCunney, assistant director of Loyola’s Center for Community Service and Justice, which coordinates the University’s Best Buddies chapter. “We are thrilled that our chapter, the commitment of our student members, and the strength of their connections with their Buddies has been recognized at this level.”
Loyola’s Best Buddies chapter has partnered with Gallagher Services for a number of years, and this academic year will work with Gallagher Services as well as the Maryland School for the Blind and St. Peter’s Adult Learning Center.
