Christopher Morrell, Ph.D., professor of mathematical sciences at Loyola University Maryland, has been named a fellow of the American Statistical Association (ASA). The honor, bestowed annually on no more than one-third of one percent of ASA’s membership, recognizes ASA members of established reputation, nominated by their peers, who have made outstanding contributions in some aspect of statistical work.
Morrell, who joined Loyola’s faculty in 1986, was selected based on his significant contributions to the development and application of the linear mixed-effects model to longitudinal data, especially in aging studies; his outstanding work as a statistical collaborator; and his leadership in advancing statistics as a field of study through undergraduate teaching, training, mentoring, and service.
A graduate of the University of Cape Town in South Africa who earned his Ph.D. in statistics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Morrell teaches all of the statistics courses offered by his department and has mentored seven students in undergraduate research projects through Loyola’s Hauber Summer Research Fellows program. He served as department chair from 2000-06 and recently led the development of a major in statistics which will be available in the fall of 2010.
Most of Morrell’s statistical research work is in collaboration with researchers at the National Institute on Aging (NIA) in Baltimore. Morrell has published more than 20 articles in peer-reviewed statistics journals as well as more than 40 papers in non-statistical peer reviewed journals. He is also a coauthor of the third edition of Learning SAS in the Computer Lab, which was published in the spring of 2009.
