Loyola University Maryland has named Rev. James J. Miracky, S.J., currently associate dean for faculty development at the College of the Holy Cross, the dean of Loyola College, Loyola’s school of arts and sciences. Fr. Miracky will assume his new duties on July 1, 2010.
“Loyola College plays a role in nearly every aspect of Loyola’s educational experience,” says University President Brian F. Linnane, S.J. “Fr. Miracky’s record of scholarship, experience in faculty development, and commitment to Jesuit and Catholic education and mission will provide great leadership to the College and I look forward to continued excellence under his direction.”
Fr. Miracky entered the Society of Jesus in 1977 and was ordained a priest in 1988. He received his B.A. in English and Philosophy from Fordham University, his M.Div. and S.T.M. degrees from the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley, and his M.A. and Ph.D. in English from Rutgers University. Fr. Miracky came to Holy Cross in 1996 and has taught courses in 20th century British fiction, as well as Shakespeare and modern drama. Previously, he completed a term as chair of the English department.
Fr. Miracky is the author of a book, Regenerating the Novel: Gender and Genre in Woolf, Forster, Sinclair, and Lawrence, Routledge Press (2003), and has authored numerous journal articles, theater and book reviews, and conference presentations.

Dr. Timothy Law Snyder, Loyola’s vice president for academic affairs, oversaw the search for the dean.

James Miracky’s extensive knowledge of academic operations; faculty, chair, and other administrative roles; and living and learning communities make him an outstanding choice to lead Loyola College,” says Snyder. “We have searched for a leader with the ability to represent the diversity of people, programs, and disciplines within the arts and sciences, to communities internal and external, and have found that person in Fr. Miracky.”
Loyola College is composed of twenty-one academic departments with approximately 200 full-time faculty. The College offers undergraduate degree programs in the traditional liberal arts, engineering, and speech language pathology/audiology. It also offers masters programs in computer science, liberal studies, pastoral counseling, psychology, and speech language pathology, as well as a Ph.D. program in pastoral counseling and a Psy.D. program in clinical psychology.
