Workshop gives high school students financial aid advice, chance to win $500 scholarship
Want a head start on navigating the college financial aid process—and a chance to win a $500 scholarship? Don't miss College Goal Sunday, a free workshop designed for prospective college students and their families. The event takes place Sunday, Feb. 7, from 1 - 4 p.m. in the Sellinger Atrium on Loyola University Maryland's North Charles Street campus.
Students and families who attend College Goal Sunday will receive expert advice as they complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), the key document in the higher education financial aid application process. The FAFSA is a crucial first step for students who plan to pay for college with the help of grants, scholarships, work-study funds, and/or student loans.
All students who participate will be eligible to win a $500 scholarship. In addition, representatives from CASH Tax Services will be present to offer families income tax preparation assistance. This service is free for families with annual incomes of $49,000 or less, and $29 or $39 for others.
Students should be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian, and families should bring the following with them to the event:
- Driver's licenses or other identification
- Social Security Numbers
- 2009 W-2 forms and other income records
- 2009 untaxed income records (Social Security, veteran's benefits, etc)
- 2009 bank statements
- 2009 business and investment records
- Alien registration cards for non-U.S. citizens

Established in 1989 by the Indiana Student Financial Aid Association with funding from the Lilly Endowment and Lumina Foundation, College Goal Sunday has grown to include nearly 40 state programs which assisted more than 100,000 students and families last year. The Loyola College Goal Sunday program is one of seven taking place in Maryland in January and February, and the only one in Baltimore City.
Loyola's College Goal Sunday program is sponsored by the University's School of Education and its College Counseling Corps. The College Counseling Corps is a full-time service program through which specially trained recent college graduates assist talented, often low-income, students in carefully selected high schools with the college application process.
