Loyola University Maryland's Center for Innovation in Urban Education (CIUE) will co-sponsor a forum in which Baltimore youth will discuss the state of the educational and employment opportunities available to them. The event, which takes place from 6:30 - 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 18 in room 210 of the New Student Center at Morgan State University, is free and open to the public.
The forum, "Quit Locking Up Our Youth: The Struggle for Jobs, Education, and Money for College," will feature a video, student-led discussion, and community dialogue on the experiences of youth in Baltimore. Most notably, the forum will explore why, with drop-out rates falling and graduation rates climbing, nearly $300 million is being spent on juvenile detention centers and just $3 million has been allocated for the development of youth employment. Participants will include students from Morgan State; Heritage High School, a public school in East Baltimore; and the Baltimore Algebra Project, a student-organized program providing one-on-one math tutoring and leadership opportunities.
This event is part of a series of talks, panel discussions, readings, and other programs sponsored by Loyola's CIUE and designed to promote dialogue on education in Baltimore, as well as deeper understanding of the need for a new vision of urban education. Morgan State University's Institute for Urban Research and the Baltimore Algebra Project are co-sponsoring this forum.
