Statement from the President, Rev. Brian Linnane, S.J.

One of the best parts of my role as Loyola's president is the chance I have to talk to students about the impact attending a Jesuit university can have on the rest of their lives. Much more than an intellectual philosophy, the Jesuit approach to education influences how students see the world; the way they engage with people they encounter; the responsibilities they assume as capable, responsible, and-- above all--ethical leaders.

Of course, I could be seen as a bit biased on this topic, since I've been a member of the Jesuit order for more than 30 years and have been a faculty member or administrator at Jesuit universities for virtually my entire career. But I am also a very proud product of Jesuit education. I earned my undergraduate degree at Boston College, and later earned graduate degrees at Georgetown University and the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley. My high school and college experiences played a significant part in my decision to enter the Jesuits, but even if I had chosen a different path, my Jesuit education would still have had an enormous impact on my life, as it has on so many of my friends and colleagues.

Graduates of Jesuit universities represent some of the most interesting people you will ever meet. For us, learning is almost addictive—we rarely settle for simple explanations and ask more questions than we can ever hope to have answered. We are emboldened global citizens, eager to explore new communities and cultures both near and far. We are caring friends, not only of those we encounter every day, but of those with whom we merely share a planet. We are innovative, resourceful, and adept at applying our skills and expertise to the opportunities and challenges that come our way.

Loyola University Maryland is an especially powerful example of the Jesuit experience at its finest. We graduates of Jesuit education are members of a unique and particularly rewarding community, and I am delighted to welcome new Loyola students to our number each year.
